Chapter 3

The Conference Forest - The Reforestation Afternoon

The conference was held at Marangu Teachers´ College close to Kinukamori
Waterfalls on the green slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The environment is
famous for its beauty and lush nature, attracting thousands of visitors
from all over the world every year. However, the regions ecological balance
is jeopardized due to forest exploitation, overpopulation, global warming and
pollution.

One conference afternoon was dedicated to learn about the ecology of this
magnificent waterfall and surroundings, Chagga history and culture, the
latter especially in relation to HIV/AIDS.
Nature is the very basis of our biological and physical existence, but also
our mental and social development and, in a deeper sense, our spiritual
growth.
The tree sapling is the symbol of youth, growth, strength, hope, healing
power, awareness and future.
Each participant planted one ficus sapling, the native and protective
species of the region, on a half-barren slope above the waterfall.
