As with many African cultures, the owl is a bad omen. If an owl settled on your roof at night, an impending death in the family was protended. To avert the death, a witch doctor would perform a cleansing ceremony while wearing a wreath of shells, blowing through a cow horn to scare evil spirits away. A calabash held ceremonial medicine which was drunk by all members of the family. | |
