The Exhausted Slave

  During colonial oppression, Tanzania was "mined" for slaves, who were kept in caves on Zanzibar, and then auctioned in Zanzibar Town. Those suffering from exhaustion were dealt a cruel fate. If he or she collapsed from carrying huge loads, they were killed on the spot, for fear that they would run to neighboring towns to warn others of capture by slave traders.  
 

 

 

Here the artist renders a very literal, and impactful interpretation of the anguish suffered by the Chagga during the various colonial regimes that dictated history for several centuries.
